New Delhi: The Indian government today imposed a curfew on all types of onion exports. Exports of chopped or powdered onions are exempt. The Director General of External Affairs (DGFT) has issued a notice banning the export of PIAG. Exports of onions produced in Bangalore and Krishnapuram have also been suspended. Onion prices are rising in the country, while in some places there is a shortage of them. In view of this, the government has imposed restrictions on all types of onion exports. Onion prices usually rise at this time of year. But it is feared that a large number of onions were exported during the epidemic this year. India exported 14 million tonnes of onions between April and June last year. During the fiscal year 2019-20, PIA exports amounted to $ 60 million. India has exported its onions to Bangladesh, Malaysia, the UAE and Sri Lanka.
Last year, the government imposed a ban on onion exports. Exports were halted after rising prices in the country, with a minimum export price set at $ 450 per tonne. The floods in Maharashtra and Karnataka last year destroyed the onion crop. That’s why it went up. On March this year, its minimum export price was revoked and onion exports were allowed.
