New Delhi: India has made great strides in vehicle manufacturing over the past few years. Not only India but also one of the Asian superpowers, China, is moving fast. India is now fourth in the list of countries that produce the most cars. China has won the number one crown.
At the time, India was not in the top 10. It was ranked 81st and China 16th. But a few years later, many global carmakers set up factories in these two countries. As a result, vehicle production increased rapidly. By 191, Japan was number one, followed by the United States, Germany, France, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Brazil. At that time, Japan had the highest production capacity of 4.1 million vehicles. Ten years later, by 2009, China had risen to number one in vehicle production. It was followed by Japan, Germany, South Korea, Brazil, the United States, India, France, Spain and Iran. In 2008, China produced 1.03 crore vehicles. India produced 11.8 lakh vehicles at that time.
In 2017, the production landscape changed dramatically. But China has managed to maintain its number one position. In 2016, 2.13 crore vehicles were produced in China. In 2009, India was ranked seventh. It has risen to fourth place by 2019, with the highest number of vehicles produced in India in the next ten years. In 2016, India produced 34.2 lakh vehicles. China tops the list this year, followed by Japan, Germany, India, South Korea, the United States, Brazil, Spain, France and Russia.
