Justice Harish Tandon has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court. Justice Tandon has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court by President Draupadi Murmu. The notification was issued by the Law Ministry with the approval of the Union Government, and Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal informed this by tweeting. In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed Justice Harish Tandon, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court, the Minister informed. Justice Tandon is currently serving as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court.
However, on March 6, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of the Judge of the Calcutta High Court as the Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court. This recommendation was made after the retirement of Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19. Justice Arindam Sinha, currently serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, was recommended by the Collegium yesterday for transfer to the Allahabad High Court, while Justice Tandon was appointed as the Chief Justice of the state High Court today. However, the recommendation for Justice Arindam Sinha has not yet been approved by the Central Government.
Justice Harish Tandon was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on April 13, 2010. He has been working there since then. With this, Justice Tandon is at the seventh place in the seniority list of all-India High Court judges. However, before his elevation as a judge, he was practicing civil cases in the Calcutta High Court.
