New Delhi: The government has cracked down on the Eid al-Adha rules aimed at reducing onion prices. The import rules will remain in force until January 31, 2021. As a result, onions can come in handy and cheaply. Once it reaches the market, people can buy onions at affordable prices. The onion law has been in place since October 31. That facility has been extended to January 31. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the general public is concerned about the high price of onions. Its import rules have been tightened to increase the availability of onions. So the government has also set some conditions for this. The quarantine officer will first check how many onions come into the country. Once the onions are found to be pesticide-free, they will go on the market. Organizations that import onions have to submit a fact sheet. They will announce in advance that people are being imported for use. Onions are imported by private companies. So the price is likely to remain high until new crops come to market. In some places, new onions are starting to hit the market. That’s why onions in Delhi are priced at less than Rs 80 per kg. By October, the price of onions was around Rs 80-60. In some places, onion prices have risen to around Rs 100. People in the country use 1.5 million tonnes of onions a year. Uttar Pradesh has the highest sales of 2.1 lakh tonnes per month, followed by Bihar and Maharashtra with 1 lakh tonnes.
