NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi, who resigned as party president in May 2016 after a tragic defeat by the Congress in the general elections less than 14 months ago today, has once again expressed his unwillingness to lead the country’s oldest party. However, efforts are underway to change his mind, according to sources close to him. Last Sunday, Rahul suddenly flew to an unknown place in a foreign country. Rahul’s ignorance has left many party leaders and activists in a state of turmoil ahead of the 139th anniversary of the Congress and the peasant movement in the country. On the other hand, while his mother, Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, is scheduled to replace him with a new permanent chairman of the party next month, Rahul is not expected to run for the post. Earlier in the day, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said that 8.6 per cent of the Congress party was in favor of re-electing Rahul.
