The inquiry committee constituted by the Supreme Court in the much-discussed Pegasus spy case submitted its report in the apex court on Thursday. The committee examined 29 mobile phones. Five of these were found to contain malware. However, it cannot be determined whether it is Pegasus or not.
The committee submitted its report to the Supreme Court in three parts. Part of it states that a law should be made to protect the privacy rights of citizens.
The report of the committee headed by retired Justice Rabindran can be uploaded on the Supreme Court’s website. Requests for release of revised portions of other reports to interested parties will be considered.
The Expert and Oversight Committee constituted by the Supreme Court to probe the Pegasus spy in its report said that the Central Government did not cooperate in the case. The apex court will now hear the case after four weeks.
Apart from the retiring Chief Justice NV Ramana, who will retire tomorrow Friday, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli were also present on the bench for the hearing. Part one of the three-part research report recommends legislation to protect privacy and ensure the country’s cyber security.
